Avco Industries Central Islip Makes Pizza Boxes and More Takeaways

Korine, a student at Stony Brook University in the 80s, went into the kitchen of the Centereach house he and a friend rented, opened a pizza box on the counter, and found no pizza slices. But where can he order more?
“I don’t know where this guy ordered pizza because it was a regular box,” recalls Korin. “I said, ‘You know what, every pizzeria should put their name on the box.’ At the time, unless you were Pizza Hut or Domino, your name was rarely on the box.”
So, after Stony Brook got her degree in biochemistry, Korine abandoned her plans to go to medical school and founded Avco Industries in 1990. Since then, the company’s customer base has expanded to include thousands of small takeaways and other businesses that purchase not only pizza boxes, but a variety of branded paper products including bags, cups, plates, wax paper, bread bins and more.
“Our focus is on sales in local stores,” Korin said. “A big part of our goal is to give local coffee shops the same image as Starbucks.”
Branded paper products are more important than ever for small business visibility through social media, the business owner added.
“A few years ago, if you were a coffee shop or a pizzeria, you would sell products to local customers and become known locally. Thanks to social media, everything has changed,” he said. “If you’re in a cool cafe or pizzeria, which is great, you usually post a picture of a box or mug with the name of the place, and that will make them more famous.”
Korine notes that the company is “green by default”, recycling all waste paper to produce new products.
Avco manufactures at several locations in the US: Florida, Colorado, Georgia, New Jersey and, of course, at its headquarters in Islip Center, which employs hundreds of people on the island.
